Single row cylindrical roller bearings

Single row cylindrical roller bearings are separable radial bearings, except for some full complement cylindrical roller bearings where several variations are not separable due to their internal design features.

Single-row bearings are produced in different designs that differ in the arrangement of the stops. These stops, combined with specially designed and surface-finished roller ends, allow for better lubrication, reduced friction and thus lower operating temperatures.

The ring fitted with stops, together with the roller-cage assembly, can be separated from the inner ring. This makes bearing assembly much easier.
Furthermore, this enables the use of tight fits where appropriate for both outer and inner rings. This is of advantage in applications where vibrations or shock loads occur.

For single row cylindrical roller bearings, the radial loads and speed ratings are relatively high when compared to other roller bearings.
Depending on their particular design the single row cylindrical roller bearings are non-locating radially loaded bearings, although several design variations will also accept limited magnitude of axial loading in one or both directions.

The most common versions are described below:

  • “N” design: the inner ring of this bearing has two integral rabbets – the outer ring has none. The axial displacement relative to the housing can take place in the two directions within the bearing itself.

  • “NU” design: the outer ring of this bearing has two integral rabbets – the inner rings has none. The axial displacement relative to the housing can take place in the two directions within the bearing itself.

  • NJ” design : the outer ring of this bearing has two integral rabbets, while the inner ring has only one rabbet. These bearings can secure axially the shaft in one direction only.

  • “NUP” design : the outer ring of this bearings has two integral rabbets, while the inner ring has one integral rabbet and one non-integral reported. These bearings are suitable for use as fixed bearings, they can secure axially the shaft in both directions.

  • HJ” design : thrust rings which are used in combination to tapered roller bearings.

  • NU” design + thrust rings “HJ” : a bearing with this particular design can be used to secure axially the shaft in only one direction. ITS Italia doesn’t recommended to use the standards-rings on both sides of a bearing of NU execution because it could close off axially the rollers.

  • “NJ” design + thrust rings “HJ” : a bearing with this design can be used to ensure axially the shaft in both directions.

 

In addition, there are two special versions:

  • “RN” design: bearings without outer ring. The axial displacement allow by the shaft from the seat it is limited only to the housing bore.

  • “RNU” design: bearings without inner ring; in this way the shaft diameter can be larger and in this way it can get stronger and more strict systems. The axial movement permitted from the shaft with respect to the seat is limited only by the width of the track shaft.

Bearings with special designs are ideal for applications with hardened and ground raceways on the shaft or seat bore.

ITS Italia, in addition to special executions, also provides a special version of bearings, such as:

  • bearings for traction motors;
  • electrically insulation bearings;
  • and many more.

Cylindrical roller bearings are produced to normal tolerance class (PN) as standard.

On request these bearings are also produced to closer tolerances, such as tolerance classes P6 and P5.

Single row cylindrical roller bearings are produced to the normal internal clearance group “CN”, as standard.
Most of the bearings are also provided with a radial internal clearance, identified with “C3” suffix.

As other bearings, also cylindrical roller bearings can be supplied with a smaller clearance, identified with “C2” suffix, or with more widely clearance, identified with “C4” suffix.

Some bearings are also products with a special internal clearance.

The individual single and double-row bearing components of the ‘C1’ inner ring assembly are not interchangeable.

In order to function properly, single-row cylindrical roller bearings must always be subjected to a certain minimum load, particularly if they operate at high speeds or are subject to high acceleration or rapid changes in load direction.

Under these conditions, the inertia forces of the rollers and cage, as well as friction from the lubricant, can cause harmful sliding between the rollers and raceways.

In cylindrical roller bearings, the minimum load must be 2% of the dynamic load rating.
When starting at low temperatures or when the lubricant is very viscous, a higher load may be required.

The weight of the components on the bearing, together with external forces, usually exceeds the minimum load required.

When starting at high temperatures, the single-row cylindrical roller bearing must be subjected to an additional radial load.

Depending on the type, size and series of single-row cylindrical roller bearings, the cages can be:

  • injection-moulded centred on the rollers in polyamide 6.6, identified by suffix ‘TVP’;
  • solid brass in two parts, centred on the rollers, identified by suffix ‘M’.

Single row cylindrical roller bearings are used in many industrial applications such as:
